¡@¡@Professor Selten obtained a Master's Degree in Mathematics, Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, in 1957 and was later awarded a Ph.D. by Frankfurt University, Germany, in 1961. He has been Visiting Full Professor of the Schools of Business Administration, University of California, Berkeley, USA, from 1967 to 1968. In 1969, he was appointed Chair of Economics at Free University, Germany. In 1972, Professor Selten was Full Professor of the Institute for Mathematical Economics, University of Bielefeld in Germany and served in that capacity until 1984. He then joined the University of Bonn as Professor of Economics. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Bonn. ¡@¡@Professor Selten started his research in game theory in the mid 1950s. In 1965, he published his important work on distinguishing between reasonable and unreasonable decisions in predicting the outcome of games. Game theory can be described as the mathematical modeling and analysis of conflict and cooperation. Applications cover a wide range of subjects in economics, political sciences and biology. For his work in game theory, Professor Selten was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences together with Professor John C Harsanyi and Professor John F Nash. They are commended "for their pioneering analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games". Professor Selten also has been awarded numerous prizes and honorary degrees by prestigious institutions in US, Europe and Mainland China, one of the most significant being the Prize of the State North-Rhine Westfalia, Germany in 2000. ¡@¡@Professor Reinhard Selten has close ties with the Department of Economics of the University and has been giving advice on the development of its academic and research programmes. He visited CUHK as Wei Lun Visiting Professor and gave a public lecture on "Game Theory" in October 2002.
